Splatoon’s high concept is genius – and extremely Nintendo. It takes the traditionally violent first-person shooter and flips it on its head. You shoot paint, not bullets. You don’t get points for shooting enemies, you get points for shooting the environment itself. Splatoon 2 is one of the staple fun games for the Nintendo Switch, though it may soon be usurped by Splatoon 3, which is coming to the Switch on September 9th.
Release Date: October 4th
Overwatch rules, we all know it. Overwatch 2 tweaks the format, making the team-based shooter a 5v5 affair instead of the original 6v6. It also adds co-op gameplay in case you want to shoot your buds instead of against them. The biggest change is that you won’t have to pay to play Overwatch 2. Blizzard is moving to a free-to-play model with battle passes and new content every season. Players will receive a new hero or map every nine weeks, with developers committed to constant updates. We hope the new model will combat the content drought that plagued the original.
Overwatch 2 is out on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope
Release date: October 20
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was a great game that combined two popular franchises with surprisingly deep strategic gameplay. Sparks of Hope takes the cast of characters from the Mushroom Kingdom into space, though the scenery isn’t the only change. The game will add more combat to its strategy gameplay as seen in the recent trailer, but hopefully it will retain the charm that made the first one so endearing.
High on life
Release date: October 25
In a year full of Gods of War and Calls of Duty, it’s nice to throw in some new IP. High on Life is a first-person shooter game created by Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland. High on Life is exclusive to Xbox, although it will be available for both Xbox One and Xbox Series X and S.
Release date: October 25.
Suicide Squad has been delayed until 2023, but DC fans aren’t completely out of luck. Batman is apparently dead in Gotham Knights, which means the others have to fill the Caped Crusader’s shoes. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Release date: October 28
At this point, it feels silly to write a little note about what to expect from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. It’s the 19th game of the famous franchise, and it takes the series out of the Vanguard’s World War 2 setting and puts it in … modern warfare.
If you like Call of Duty games, the next one is coming out on October 28th.

It will be one of the highlights of the year if it can recapture the greatness of its predecessor.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet
Release date: November 18
Pokemon Legends: Arceus was clearly Nintendo’s pivot. It’s no surprise that the next Pokémon games, Scarlet and Violet, will adopt the real-time action template from Legends: Arceus – but it’s a big surprise that we’re getting new Pokémon games so soon. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet hit the Nintendo Switch on November 18, about 10 months after Legends: Arceus. Weaside from some peeks at its starter and legendary Pokemon, but that’s nothing surprising that a Nintendo Direct presentation can’t fix.
Final Fantasy 7: Crisis Core Reunion
Release date: TBC (2022)
Final Fantasy 7: Rebirthand will hit PlayStation 5 next winter. To give fans something to wait for, Square Enix brings a remake of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7. Originally released for the PSP in 2007, Crisis Core is a prequel to Final Fantasy 7 and focuses on Zack Fair, Cloud Strife’s mentor. The remake is a big deal because Square Enix has been uncharacteristically coy about remastering the game or porting it to any other platform. If you wanted to play Crisis Core for the past 15 years, you had to own a PSP. That will change with Crisis Core Reunion, which will hit PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch and Windows later this year.
