Samsungis scheduled for August 10th and we are on the lookout . Tomorrow’s event is expected to bring new versions of the company’s foldable phones, the so-called and as well as the successor .
Rumored to be called the Galaxy Watch 5, the upcoming smartwatch may feature the latest versionthat and Google created together. If the rumors turn out to be accurate, the Galaxy Watch 5 could also address a major shortcoming: battery life.
I hope Samsung makes more of a commitment to Google software and services. The Galaxy Watch 4 currently feels caught between the Google and Samsung ecosystems, as my colleague Scott Stein wrote in. They finally got the watch among other Google services, but it took several months after launch for these to appear.
Samsung hasn’t said a word about plans for its next smartwatch, though the company usually launches a new wearable device in August. However, we expect new foldable phones to be announced. In fact, to encourage people to reserve their phones early, from July 19 to August 10,based on different packages, from a maximum discount of $200 for those who book a Galaxy phone, watch and headphones, to a minimum discount of $30 for just booking a Galaxy bud. While this may be a hint of what’s to come at Unpacked, the savings could be on older Galaxy Watch or Galaxy Buds models.
Here’s our best guess at what Samsung might be planning, based on leaks and the company’s previous launches.
Possible August announcement
Only Samsung knows when the next Galaxy Watch will arrive. But the company has a history of launching new wearables in August alongside other new products. For example, debuted in August last year while arrived in August 2020. Samsung already launched a number of new gadgets in 2022, from set to cheaper New and . The only thing we haven’t heard about yet is a smartwatch, so there’s a chance Samsung will save that for its typical August Unpacked event.
The Galaxy Watch 5 may come with a faster 10W charger, compared to the 5W charger that came with previous Samsung watches. Image of the alleged 10W charger for Galaxy Watch 5 appeared on SnoopyTech’s Twitter feed on Aug. 1 (h/t BGR), and it can reportedly reach a 45% charge in 30 minutes.
Faster charging has become a major feature of several smartwatches, including thoseand . This is especially important since the watch has also become a sleep-tracking tool, and earlier this year Samsung debuted to assess the quality of sleep while wearing the Galaxy Watch 4.
Bigger battery than Galaxy Watch 4
One of the disadvantages of the Galaxy Watch 4 is the relatively short battery life, which usually lasts one to two days. There’s a chance that could change with the Galaxy Watch 5. Tech blog Sam Mobile claims to have found a regulatory filing that suggests the 40mm Galaxy Watch 5 will have a slightly larger battery capacity than the Galaxy Watch 4. Samsung declined to comment on the report.
Longer battery life would make the Galaxy Watch 5 a more capable sleep tracker, since you might not need to charge it every night. It would also help Samsung catch upin this respect because his and The watch lasts several days on a single charge. Battery life has been one of the Galaxy Watch 4’s biggest downfalls so an improvement would be a welcome change.
It might be able to take your temperature
The Galaxy Watch 4 can already track metrics like your body composition, blood oxygen levels, and heart rate. According to Korean news site ETNews, Samsung could expand its health ambitions by adding the ability to measure body temperature to the Galaxy Watch 5. The report doesn’t provide many details, other than to say that Samsung has “invented technology that can measure body temperature as accurately as possible.” Samsung declined to comment on the ETNews report.
But TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who is known for his Apple product predictions, disputed the development. He suggested that “algorithmic limitations” could prevent Samsung from introducing the feature to the Galaxy Watch 5.
Temperature sensing is nothing new in wearables.the eponymous wellness ring can measure the temperature from your finger to help detect changes that may be happening in your body. Fitbit devices like the Sense and Versa 3 can also detect temperature.
If Samsung adds temperature sensing to its next smartwatch, it would be another sign that wearables have become comprehensive health and wellness devices. Metrics like blood oxygen saturation are now fairly common in wearables from Apple, Fitbit, Samsung and Garmin.
Samsung may abandon the classic model
The Galaxy Watch 4 comes in standard and classic versions, but that could change with the Galaxy Watch 5. Instead, Samsung will launch the Galaxy Watch 5 and Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, according to Sam Mobile. The regular Galaxy Watch 5 will reportedly come in two sizes, while the Pro version may be limited to one size. It’s also unclear whether Samsung will bring the rotating bezel of the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic to the Galaxy Watch 5 or 5 Pro, the report said. While the blog didn’t share more details about what specifically to expect from the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, it’s possible that the new branding could be hinting at a major update that’s more than just a refresh.
Prominent leaker Evan Blass also hinted that Samsung’s next watch will come in a standard and “pro” model. He labeled the new watches as the Galaxy Watch 5 and Watch 5 Pro when he shared what he claims are official renders of the devices on tech blog 91Mobiles.
Similar design to Galaxy Watch 4
The Galaxy Watch 5 is expected to have a circular design similar to the Galaxy Watch 4, according to leaks from Blass and 91Mobiles. Blass said the Pro model will be available in black or titanium gray, while Samsung will reportedly offer a wider range of colors for the standard version. The 91Mobiles leak shows the alleged Galaxy Watch 5 Pro in black and titanium gray and the alleged Watch 5 in white, blue and black.
It will likely run Wear OS
Samsung has yet to announce any details about its next smartwatch. But because the Galaxy Watch 4 keeps running, it seems likely that his successor will be as well. Google and Samsung have collaborated to develop the new Wear OS, which means that Samsung is likely committed to using this software for its future smartwatches. The Sam Mobile report also said the watch will have a new version of One UI, a customized version of Google’s software for Samsung’s watch.
Samsung is the first to launch a smartwatch that runs on Google’s new Wear OS. But the landscape will soon become more competitiveexpected to arrive on watches from other companies such as and . Google’s Pixel Watch will also arrive in the fall.
What we want from the Galaxy Watch 5
You’ll always appreciate the longer battery life and new health tracking features. But what we really want from the Galaxy Watch 5 is software that makes them feel completely part of the Google ecosystem. The Galaxy Watch 4 is torn between Google and. Yes, it has the Google Play app store and other Google apps. However, the setup process and health monitoring still rely heavily on Samsung apps.
Society is addressing this to some extentto your watch. However, we hope to see a closer integration with Google in the next version, which will make the Galaxy Watch 5 really look like the best Android smartwatch.
