Editor’s note, February 9, 2022: The VPN industry has undergone significant changes in the last few months, with all three of our best VPN choices announcing major changes in enterprise ownership. In December, ExpressVPN announced that it had officially joined Kape Technologies, a company that already owns several other VPNs and has raised privacy concerns in the past. In February, NordVPN and Surfshark announced that the two companies would merge, although they would continue to operate autonomously. In light of these changes, we are reviewing all of our top tips. We will update our reviews and, if necessary, our ratings to reflect this new competitive environment.
ExpressVPN tells us that its network is powered by TrustedServer technology, which ExpressVPN has created to ensure that there are never any records of users’ online activity. In the world of privacy, ExpressVPN is doing well because it has seized the VPN server from authorities that at the time proved their zero protocol policy true. We also like the quality of the VPN setup wizards and the detailed information in its FAQ. And it offers a full-featured dedicated extension for Chrome.
While its speeds are constantly competing with strong competitors, our speed tests in 2020 showed that ExpressVPN caused a 52% overall loss of our normal internet speeds, a significant slowdown compared to its 2% speed loss score in 2019.
Like the top five VPN services we’ve reviewed, ExpressVPN offers a useful kill-switch feature that prevents network data from leaking out of a secure VPN tunnel if the VPN connection fails. Unlike others, however, ExpressVPN has earned us points for supporting bitcoin as a payment method – something that does not offer all of our favorites, but adds another layer of privacy when paying.
The VPN provider has been operating since 2009 and ExpressVPN has an extensive network of fast VPN servers located in 94 countries. His best plan costs less than $ 7 a month for an annual package that includes three months free.

The Surfshark network is smaller than some others, but the VPN service does so in terms of features and speed. Let’s start with the biggest win it offers: unlimited device support. If you want to run your entire home or office on a Surfshark VPN, you don’t have to worry about how many devices you have turned on or connected. It also offers anti-malware, ad blocking and tracking blocking as part of its software.
And it’s fast. With more than 3,200 servers in 65 countries, we lost less than 17% of the average Internet speed during our latest speed tests. This is faster than the 27% speed loss we saw in previous tests, and moves it ahead of ExpressVPN to be the current pioneer in our speed comparisons.
Surfshark received a generally high rating when its Chrome extension was audited for privacy by the German security firm Cure 53 (PDF link to full report) – although this audit was commissioned by Surfshark.
The VPN provider has a solid range of support for applications that run on Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, Fire TV and routers. Other devices, such as game consoles, can be configured for Surfshark using DNS settings. We especially like the feature that allows you to add certain applications and websites to your whitelist and automatically bypass VPN. For some business purposes, this can be critical.
Surfshark also offers three special modes designed for those who want to bypass the restrictions and more carefully hide their online steps. Masking mode masks your VPN activity so your ISP does not know you are using VPN. Multihop skips your connections across multiple countries to hide your track. Finally, the NoBorders mode allows [you] Be careful. Doing any of these three things can be illegal in your country and can result in severe sanctions. During testing, we did not notice a single IP address or DNS leak and had no problem accessing Netflix.
Unlike many other VPN providers, Surfshark does not offer an annual plan. His best bid right now is $ 2.30 a month for a two-year plan (you pay about $ 60 in advance). The six-month plan is $ 6.49 per month (about $ 39 in advance) and the monthly plans are $ 13 per month. Be sure to take advantage of its generous 30-day trial to decide if you like this service and the Chrome VPN extension (and if you choose a two-year plan, you may be reminded in 23 months if you can persuade the company to continue the discount rate).

NordVPN is one of the most recognized brands in the field of VPN. It offers a generous number of simultaneous connections with six simultaneous connections through its network, where almost all other providers offer five or less. NordVPN also offers a dedicated IP option, a kill-switch function and a VPN option to Tor. We did not detect any privacy leaks during our tests.
In our latest speed tests, NordVPN’s performance was comparable to that of many of its competitors, reducing our speeds by an average of 53% (which is slower than the 32% loss measured in previous speed tests). We found that NordVPN speeds were reliably high. There have never been any sudden downturns or service interruptions, and where we expected the VPN not to be efficient, it still worked.
The company’s two-year VPN subscription plan costs $ 3.29 per month ($ 79 charged at a time). This price is lower than most bidders, but approaches the annual plan ($ 4.99 per month or a total of $ 60) and the monthly plan ($ 11.99 per month). However, it has a full 30-day refund policy.
Although NordVPN has lived on this list for a long time, we moved it to the criminal box in October 2019 to reconsider our recommendation after the news appeared that one of its leased servers was accessible without authorization in 2018. Following the discovery, Nord’s actions included – possibly – numerous security audits, a bug bounty program and increased investment in VPN security.
Although we would have preferred Nord to have identified this issue much earlier, the fact that the breach was limited in nature and did not include any user-identifying information served to further verify that NordVPN did not keep any records of user activity. As a result, Nord remains on this list as a recommended VPN service.

Chrome VPN FAQ
What’s the best VPN for Chrome right now?
- ExpressVPN won the CNET Editors’ Choice Award for Best Overall VPN. We evaluate VPNs based on their overall performance in three main categories: speed, security, and price. Express is not the cheapest, but it is one of the fastest and so far the safest. (Note that we are currently reviewing ExpressVPN based on the reports above.)
- Surfsharkwith its lower price, it ranks second among our selections due to impressive performance and unlimited equipment.
- NordVPN, our third choice is a staunch heavy striker. It costs more than Surfshark, but less than Express, has a huge network that is constantly accelerating and more secure, and is easily the most reliable service we’ve tested.
Commercial Virtual Private Network is a technology that allows you to establish a private connection over a less private network by creating an encrypted tunnel between your computer and the Internet. You can install a VPN just like any other application or program on your smartphone or computer. A VPN will allow you to bypass censorship in your country or gain access to geographically limited media content from another country – and prevent your ISP from invading your privacy by tampering with your web browsing. VPNs do this by allowing you to look like you are connecting from another place or country.
VPN is great for anyone who uses public, unprotected Wi-Fi, such as the one offered at airports, bars or cafes. Your VPN protects your sensitive information — from your work projects to your bank account credentials — from being seen by malicious actors running public Wi-Fi networks.
