Love, Death + Robots (2019–)
This animated anthology series for adults includes a variety of genres and lots of episodes push the Black Mirror comparison button. Robots in the post-apocalyptic city, farmers piloting mechanical suits and a failed space mission will all appear in the first season. While the episodes can be hit and missed (some have been criticized for their behavior towards women), you will find plenty of impressive animations that make you think.
This apocalyptic sci-fi from Belgium will probably discourage you from flying soon. Into the Night takes place on a plane and sees a red-eyed kidnapped soldier who, along with the rest of the passengers, eventually survives a deadly global event down on earth. Can they keep the plane running long enough to take them to safety? This premise alone should be enough to entice you to watch this great, exciting thriller.
Hilary Swank is a big star in the heart of the space drama Away. He plays Emma Green, a NASA astronaut and commander of the Mars expedition. Things start to get awkward, and Emma’s international crew fills her with doubts about her ability to command. Due to the time lag between terrestrial drama and reliable entertainment over the stratosphere, Away is mostly successful in landing on a versatile journey.
Do you enjoy a sci-fi series that plays with two timelines? Do you have a special place for cults and mysteries? Meet Archive 81. The multi-genre show plays Mamoudou Athie as Dan Turner, an archivist who restores a collection of damaged videotapes from the 1990s. He gets much more than he agreed to, he is drawn into the investigation of a mysterious cult and a young woman who may or may not be dead. A supernatural thriller with horror, mystery, noir and sci-fi seeped into its spooky atmosphere, Archive 81 has it all.
Stranger Things (2016–)
Without Stranger Things, it wouldn’t be the best list. If you somehow missed the Duffer brothers’ ode to the 80’s horror and Steven Spielberg, things would go wrong soon. We watch El, an almost dumb girl who has been the subject of scientific experiments. He develops the telekinetic abilities he uses to repel monsters that invade the frightening alternative dimension. Indiana’s world, Hawkins, is lovingly depicted for anyone who needs the nostalgic hit of the ’80s, and ill-fitting characters in a stellar young cast are part of everything that makes this show a tour de force.
Full Release: Netflix has unfortunately canceled Travelers after its third season, but this carefully crafted sci-fi from Canada can end in an ambitious bang. We start with Marcy, a disabled woman who was beaten after helping a friend escape the rapists. He will die – then return to life. This powerful character-driven sci-fi reveals its secrets in clever ways, tracking agents from the future whose task is to prevent the collapse of society, but also to move through the complex territory of double life.

While the bleak technology series of Charlie Brooker’s anthology can be missed and missed at its best, Black Mirror offers its mini-films by exploring futuristic technology ideas through painfully human stories. One of them is San Junipero, watching two women in the 80’s (the sound of banging) who fell in love in ways they couldn’t in their “real” life outside the beach town. The technical aspect is revealed with ingenious timing, and in general the show examines the consequences of our lives involved in a disturbing and sometimes uplifting way.

If The 100 looks like your standard drama for teenagers, be prepared to exceed your expectations. There is a reason why this post-apocalyptic series has been recorded for seven seasons: The 100 brings rich dilemmas on building the world and moral dilemmas that push stereotypical characters into unique, impressive places. The 100 are a generation of juvenile detainees sent to Earth to find out if it is a habitable post-apocalypse. Try it 100 percent.
The German response to Stranger Things deliberately takes the time to enter completely impressive and original places. Dark sci-fi noir combines time travel, conspiracies and alienated families into a story of a long generation that starts the disappearance of a child. If you desire these carefully crafted layers in your story, settle down. All three periods of Dark’s meditative view of time travel and its impact on human nature await to strike you in full force.

Canceling Netflix is not as criminal as The OA ax. This wildly unique story follows Prairie Johnson, a young blind woman who returns after being missing for years, now with the ability to see. He claims to be the “original angel” and convinces a small group of locals to listen to its impossible story, including kidnappings and large escapes. OA is a kind of grounded sci-fi that will surprise you and your heroes when they present their fantastic concepts. Check out the first two flawless seasons on Netflix and pray that the third will be downloaded elsewhere.
Lost in Space (2018-2021)
The restart of the series of the same name from 1965 moves us forward to 2046, two years after humanity is on the verge of extinction. The talented Robinson family sets out with a crew to colonize a new planet. In addition to the inevitable family drama, he faces a strange new environment and a strange alien robot who befriends young Will. Mystery, heart and unforgettable villain in the game Dr. Parker Posey’s Smiths give Lost in Space plenty of fuel to recover (Series 2 and 3 are significantly improved over Series 1).
Yeah, this is Gong Yoo from Squid Game. What else do you need to know? This South Korean sci-fi mystery follows an astronaut crew on a mission to an abandoned research facility on the moon. Their purpose: a sample of an unknown substance for unclear purposes. Betrayal, government lies, and personal secrets push this addictive space journey into a tailcoat.
Altered Carbon (2018-2020)
Altered Carbon takes place in a cyberpunk world, where human consciousness can be transferred to different bodies. This sees investigator and former soldier Takeshi Kovacs transported to the body of Joel Kinnaman in season 1 and Anthony Mackie in season 2. Kovacs’ story initially involves solving the murder before he sets out on an expedition to reveal what happened to his own lost lover. Altered Carbon can be clumsy at times, but its visual candy and entertainment value will lift you through exposure and harsh social commentary.

Another story that plays with reality comes from the creators of The Matrix. Sense8 follows eight foreigners from around the world who find themselves mentally and emotionally connected. Not only do these windows teach tolerance to completely different lives, but “sensationalists” can also touch each other’s skills as they face the sinister organization that hunts them. If you have fun with different Sense8 characters, you will fall headlong into this serious and sensual sci-fi drama.
